Der Geist ist ein Wasserfall is een overzichtstentoonstelling van werk dat de Duitse kunstnaar Klaus Weber tussen 1991 en 2005 maakte, toont een serie sociale, culturele en politieke 'fonteinen'. In deze tentoonstelling worden de werken voor het eerst in samenhang getoond. De scheuren in de moderne samenleving worden vastgesteld en op een magische manier getransformeerd en ze doen tegelijkertijd een voorstel voor een alternatieve stad, met alternatieve perspectieven, gecorrigeerd door LSD, paddestoelen op het trottoir, een auto-ongeluk en vleesetende planten.
De Public Fountain LSD Hall, een werk in opdracht van de eerste editie van de Frieze Art Fair (Londen, UK), is een prachtige, delicate, uit meerdere verdiepingen bestaande glazen fontein, die water -waar LSD aan toegevoegd is- spuit en spettert onder een dak van vleesetende planten. Unfolding Cul-de-Sac is een soort herschepping gebaseerd op Webers oorspronkelijke project Brutstube, dat eerder op de straten van Berlijn werd uitgevoerd en waarin een plak asfalt op een galerievloer is aangebracht, waardoorheen gedurende de duur van de tentoonstelling paddestoelen groeien.
De naam van de tentoonstelling in Showroom MAMA is afgeleid van een vroeg werk, dat een voorbode was van Webers fascinatie: een simpele, geëmailleerde emmer met daarop de tekst "Der Geist ist ein Wasserfall", met daarin een brok steen waar water overheen loopt.
Tot de andere werken die getoond worden behoren verder de videoregistraties Fountain Loma Dr/W 6th St, documentatie van een fontein die bestond uit een auto die op een brandkraan is geknald, een werk dat slechts éen dag te zien was in downtown Los Angeles, en het werk Demo Inverse waarin een Duitse politiebus en een klein, bescheiden personenauto'tje, beide voorzien van luidsprekers, een soort choreografie uitvoeren.
Klaus Weber werd in 1967 geboren in het Duitse Sigmaringen. In 2002 was hij artist in residence in Villa Aurora, Los Angeles en in 2002-2003 in de Delfina Studios in Londen. Tot zijn eerder expostities behoren o.a. Sick Fox, Andrew Kreps Gallery, New Yourk (2004); Frieze Art Fair, Londen (2003); Cubitt, Londen (2004). Hij maakte deel uit van de groepstentoonstellingen Communism, Project Gallery, Dublin (2005); World Watchers, Kunsthaus Dresden (2004) en Violence is at the margin of all things, Generali Foundation, Wenen (2002). Op het programma voor 2005 staan verder nog een solotentoonstelling bij Hamburger Kunstverein en een groepstentoonstelling in MOCA van het Geffen Contemporary, Los Angeles.
Curator van Der Geist... is Ian White, momenteel Adjunct Film Curator bij Whitechapel Art Gallery, Londen, columnist voor het tijdschrift Art Review en schrijver, die ook aan onafhankelijke projecten werkt.
Een performance-lezing wordt gepresenteerd bij Rotterdam's openbare fontein op het Hofplein op zaterdag 28 mei om 15:00u.

A monographic exhibition of work from 1991-2005 by German artist Klaus Weber, der Geist... presents a series of social, cultural and political "fountains". Shown together for the first time here, they enact and magically transform ruptures in the fabric of modern life, proposing an alternative city and alternative perspectives, corrected by LSD, sidewalk mushrooms, a car crash and carnivorous plants.
Commissioned by the first Frieze Art Fair (London, UK), Public Fountain LSD Hall is a delicately beautiful multi-tiered glass fountain that trickles and splashes potentised LSD beneath a ceiling of carnivorous plants. Unfolding Cul-de-Sac, is a recreation of sorts, based on Weber's original project Brutstube on the streets of Berlin, a slab of tarmac sits on top of the gallery floor through which sidewalk mushrooms grow during the course of the exhibition. The show at Mama takes its title from an early work, itself prefiguring Weber's preoccupations: a modest enamel bucket with der Geist ist ein Wasserfall printed onto its side, containing a rock over which water flows.
Other works to be shown include the video pieces Fountain Loma Dr/W 6th St, a documentation of a public fountain that consisted of a crashed car and a fire hydrant that appeared for one day only in downtown Los Angeles and Demo Inverse where a German police van and a humble car, equipped with loud speakers, perform a kind of choreography.

der Geist is curated by Ian White, who is currently Adjunct Film Curator at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, a columnist for Art Review and writer as well as working on independent projects.
An illustrating performance-lecture will be presented by Weber and White beginning at Rotterdam's public fountain on Hof Plein on Saturday 28th May at 3pm.
