SHOWROOM MAMA WORDT OPENBARE RUIMTE.

Showroom MAMA uit rotterdam zal vanaf 15 juli t/m 25 juli 2004 haar etalageramen uit de pui verwijderen. De tentoonstelling in showroom MAMA is dan dag en nacht te bezoeken. De curator Boris van Berkum van MAMA heeft de architecten van de Ruimte en 2012 de opdracht gegeven om een openbaar stadspodium te bouwen. Op dit podium kan iedereen zich bij MAMA aanmelden om iets organiseren. De eerste aanmeldingen zijn al binnen.

De ramen uit de MAMA pui zijn als materiaal gebruikt in de Glass Hotel Suite. Uit het city podium klinkt het absurdistische hoorspel Sonic Spocht van het kunstenaars-duo HuMobisten. Het Cam Kong Collective heeft een videoinstallatie gebouwd waarbij zij gebruik maken van bewakingscamera's. De animatie van Jan van Nuenen " Warning Petrol Pipeline" is het best te omschrijven als een hallucinerend hedendaags scenario over de sabotage van de distributie van olie. De directe aanleiding voor dit tiendaagse fenomeen is de onthulling van het sculptuur "The Hermitage" van de Amerikaanse architect Lebbeus Woods. De 15 deelnemende kunstenaars hebben in totaal 5 installaties gebouwd met Woods'gedachtengoed als inspiratiebron.

Donderdag 15 juli 2004, vanaf 17.30 u. vinden er in een domino-processie de diverse onthullingen, premières en presentaties plaats.

The Hermitage

Op donderdag 15 juli 2004 onthult het NAi zijn nieuwste aanwinst, "The Hermitage" van de Amerikaanse visionaire architect Lebbeus Woods [*1940]. Deze parasietachtige stalen sculptuur, Woods' enige gerealiseerde project in de openbare ruimte, siert vanaf dan de oostkop van het depotgebouw.
The Hermitage ontstond in 1999 uit een samenwerkingsverband van de TU Eindhoven en de
MU Art Foundation. Woods maakte een abstracte "kluizenaarscel", die de spanning verbeeldt tussen individu en massa.

Het kunstwerk werd als een tijdelijke installatie twee jaar aan de gevel van De Witte Dame in Eindhoven bevestigd en daarna opgeslagen.
Onlangs werd The Hermitage door de TU Eindhoven aan het NAi geschonken en vervolgens
ingrijpend gerestaureerd. De opvallende nieuwe lokatie op de grens van stadscentrum en Museumpark versterkt de expressieve kracht van het werk. The Hermitage heeft eindelijk een thuishaven.

City City Bang Bang

MAMA gebruikt The Hermitage als uitgangspunt voor het project City City Bang Bang. Het gedachtengoed van Lebbeus Woods werd food for thought voor 15 Nederlandse kunstenaars. Het resultaat bestaat uit vijf installaties in de buitenruimte op de as showroom MAMA - NAi.

De Stad in Crisis is het centrale thema van het project. 'Juist in een crisis,' stelt Woods, 'is er ruimte voor een nieuwe onorthodoxe aanpak. 'MAMA heeft deze uitspraak ter harte genomen: de glazen gevel van MAMA wordt verwijderd, waardoor de showroom openbare ruimte wordt en er een Open City Podium en tentoonstelling ontstaat.

De vijf installaties staan verspreid over diverse locaties en zijn tien dagen lang te zien, 24 uur per etmaal, van vrijdag 16 juli t/m zondag 25 juli.

Open City Podium

Het podium staat aan alle organisaties en individuen ter beschikking om iets te organiseren. Een feestje, een performance, een filmprojectie of iets anders leuks. De eerste aanmeldingen zijn al binnen.

SHOWROOM MAMA BECOMES A PUBLIC SPACE

From the 15th of July until the 25th of July, 2004, Showroom MAMA will remove all the windows from its shop front. The exhibition will be open to visitors day and night. The curator, Boris van Berkum, has given the architects from De Ruimte and 2012 the assignment of creating a public podium within the remains. Anyone is welcome to approach MAMA to organise something for this platform. The first proposals have already been received.

MAMA's windows will be used as the material for creating the Glass Hotel Suite. The artist duo, De Humobisten will present their absurdist radio play, Sonic Spocht, from this civic platform. The Cam Kong Collective has created a video installation that makes use of security cameras. The video animation by the artist Jan van Nunen, "Warning Petrol Pipeline" is best described as a hallucinatory contemporary scenario about the sabotage of oil distribution. This ten-day phenomenon originates as a complement to the unveiling of the sculpture, "The Hermitage" by the American architect, Lebbeus Woods. The 15 participating artists have created a total of 5 installations taking Woods' body of conceptual work as inspiration.

Thursday 15th July, 2004, starting at 17:30 will see a promenade concert taking in various unveilings, premieres and presentations.

Background Information

The Hermitage

The NAI [Dutch Architectural Institute] will unveil its newest acquisition, The Hermitage by visionary American architect, Lebbeus Woods [born 1940] on Thursday, 15th July, 2004. This parasite-evoking steel sculpture - Woods' only realised work in a public space- is situated at the east end of the depot building. "The Hermitage" was conceived in 1999, the result of a collaboration between the TU Eindhoven and the MU Art Foundation. Woods has developed an abstract "hermit cell" representing the tension between the individual and the mass.

The artwork stood as a temporary installation in front of the De Witte Dame in Eindhoven for two years and was later placed in storage. Recently The Hermitage was donated to the NAI by TU Eindhoven and subsequently drastically restored. The commanding new location on the border of the city centre and the Museum Park strengthens the expressive power of the work. The Hermitage has finally found a home. City City Bang Bang

MAMA has taken The Hermitage as the starting point for the project City City Bang Bang. The conceptual body of work of Lebbeus Woods has been served up as food for thought for 15 Dutch artists. The result consists of 5 installations in the open-air shell of Showroom MAMA - NAI.

The City in Crisis is the central theme of the project. "Especially in crises, " proposes Woods ".there is space for an unorthodox approach.",. MAMA has taken this quote to heart: the glass frontage of MAMA will be entirely removed forcing the gallery to become an open public space; an Open City Platform and exhibition exist in this new open space.

The 5 installations are spread out over various locations and will be on view for ten days, 24 hours a day, from Friday 16th July until Sunday 25th July.

The podium is open to all organisations and individuals that would like to organise something: a party; a performance; a film project or anything else engaging.
