Circus Černý is een overzichtstentoonstelling van de beeldende kunst van de Tsjechische beeldhouwer David Černý (Praag, 1967) . De vaak monumentale kunstwerken zijn verspreid over 9 verschillende locaties in en rond de Witte de Withstraat en is onderdeel van kunst-en cultuurfestival "DE WERELD VAN WITTE DE WITH". Het Circus manifesteert zich in expositie- en openbare ruimtes. Enkele voorbeelden: Gigantische zwarte baby's inspecteren als insekten het gebouw van de Rotterdamse Gehandicapten Organisatie, een man van middelbare leeftijd hangt aan de vlaggemast van museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, een Trabant loopt als een heilige (koe) over het water van de Eendrachtssingel, in TENT. maken twee meter hoge pistolen de vreemdste geluiden. Circus Černý is een indrukwekkend ouvre van een Rebel with a Cause.
David Černý
Hoewel de Tsjechische beeldhouwer David Černý ook al vóór 1989 kunst maakte, wordt zijn werk meestal in verband gebracht met het spontane volksfeest dat uitbrak na de val van het IJzeren Gordijn. Vooral in Praag voltrok zich een radicale metamorfose. Wat eens verboden was, was opeens legaal, de openbare ruimte was echt weer openbaar en de kunst was zich zeer bewust van haar vermogen om met mensen te communiceren. De schrijver Jachym Topol typeerde de snelle veranderingen in zijn postcommunistische vaderland als een periode waarin de tijd explodeerde. We kunnen ons Černý voorstellen als een van de ontwerpers van deze explosie, als iemand die overal om zich heen feestelijk vuurwerk afstak. Hij heeft over de hele wereld geëxposeerd en blijft dol op het uithalen van grappen en mystificaties. Naast traditionele kunst houdt hij zich de laatste jaren ook bezig met cultureel activisme, filmen en technomuziek
Roze Tank
Černý's repuatatie als creative rebel neemt een vogelvlucht wanneer hij besluit om een Sovjettank baby-roze te verven. Juist deze sovjet tank was een oorlogsmonument ter nagedachtenis van de Russiche bevrijding van Tsjechoslowakije uit de greep van Nazi Duitsland. Černý's daad slaat in als een bom. De natie raakt verstrikt in talloze verhitte discussies op straat en zelfs in het parlement, terwijl de internationale pers rond het roze fenomeen neerstreek. Sindsdien is Černý de publieke discussie blijven voeden met zijn provocerende kunst.

Circus Černý is a retrospective of the work of the Czech sculptor, David Černý ( b. Prague, 1967). The starkly monumental art works are spread over 9 different locations in and aorund the Witte de Withstraat and is part of the art and culture festival, ‘The World of Witte de With'. The Circus manifests itself in exhibition and public spaces. Individual examples: Gigantic bloack babies inspect, insect-like, the building of the Rotterdam Disablity Organisation (Rotterdamse Gehandicapten Organisatie); a middle-aged man hangs from the flag post of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen; a Trabant walks like a holy (cow) over the water of the Eendrachtsingel; in TENT two metre high pistols make the strangest noises. Circus Černý is the compelling ouvre of a Rebel with a Cause.
David Černý
Although the Czech sculptor David Černý also made art before 1989, his work is mostly associated with the spontaneous ‘people's' expression that broke out after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Especially in Prague, there was a radical metamorphasis. What was once forbidden was at once legal. The public spaces were genuinely public and art was aware of its duty to communicate with people. The writer Jachym Topol typified the rapid changes in his post-Communist fatherland as a period in which time exploded. We can view Černý as one of the designers of this explosion; as someone who set off festive fireworks all around himself. He has exhibited all over the world and remains crazy about playing pranks. In addtion to traditional art, he has also been busy in recent years with cultural activism, flim and techno music.
Pink Tank
Černý's reputation as a creative rebel soared when he decided to paint a Soviet tank baby pink. More sopecifically, the Soviet tank that was a war monument commemorating the Russian liberation of Czechoslovakia from the grip of nazi Germany. Černý's action hit like a bomb. The nation became caught up in endless heated discsussions, in the streets and even in parliament while the international press gathered around the pink phenomenon. Černý has fed public discussion since them with his provocative art.
